REGULATIONS & STANDARDS

FEDERAL RAFTING REGULATIONS
Transport Canada acknowledges that there is a need to “promote consistent and enforceable application of safety standards across the country. Given the popularity of river rafting, and the dispersed nature of the industry, the need for consistent safety standards across the country is clear".

Working with river rafting associations, provinces, operators and other agencies, in 2000-2004, Transport Canada developed new standards. The new River Rafting Regulations are at a DRAFT stage. In the absence of legislated regulations, provincial associations, such as PROAOA, play a vital role in maintaining industry standards. PROAOA regulations ensure that member companies, in adhering to the regulations, are providing river tours meeting the following criteria:
- Tours are conducted by responsible and qualified guides.
- Industry standard safety equipment and information is provided to all participants.
- Operating practices of the company meet or exceed industry standards.

PROAOA STANDARDS
In December, 1999, PROAOA developed the Safety and Regulation Standards for the Alberta White Water Industry. The standards have been designed to minimize risk to participants of commercial river tours, so that a rewarding, fun and safe experience may be enjoyed.
